The witches of Macbeth (Kelly & Massa Photography)
The Opera Company of Philadelphia is the city’s only professional producer of grand opera. With four mainstage productions each season, the Opera Company makes its home at the regal and historic Academy of Music, America’s oldest opera house. And for the first time, in the 2007-2008 Season the Opera Company enters into a groundbreaking association with Curtis Opera Theatre and Kimmel Center Presents, marketing an exciting Philadelphia premiere in the Kimmel Center’s intimate Perelman Theatre to Opera Company subscribers.

The 2007-2008 Season opens in October with a beautiful new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto set in its original 16th century locale. From its striking overture and rousing choral music, to arias like "Caro nome," and "La donna è mobile" which have become the very hallmarks of Italian opera, Rigoletto is a favorite for the opera buff and the novice alike. In November, enter an enchanting world where children dare not wander in the wood, for fear of witches who turn little girls and boys into gingerbread! Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel comes to vivid life with sets and costumes by legendary children’s author Maurice Sendak. In February 2008, one of the great romantic works in literature finds an exhilarating operatic voice in a new opera by David DiChiera, Cyrano, which the Opera Company presents in an original co-production. Then in March, one of opera’s most talked-about contemporary works makes its Philadelphia Premiere when Osvaldo Golijov’s Grammy-winning opera, Ainadamar. With only four performances in the Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center Presents Curtis Opera Theatre’s new production with an all-student cast led by Opera Company Music Director Corrado Rovaris. The Season closes in April when the sweet melodies and thrilling vocal fireworks of opera’s bel canto style come to life in Bellini’s Norma. Considered to be the ultimate opera experience, with incomparable arias such as "Casta Diva," Norma is the stunning season finale!

We hope you’ll join us for a wonderful sampling of all of the art forms—orchestral splendor, rousing choral work, powerful solo artists, dazzling costumes, theater and dance all wrapped into one evening. We look forward to seeing you at the Opera!
