Stephen A. Madva
Stephen A. Madva is a partner and, since 2002, chairman of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP. Since 1989, he has been a member of the firm's management committee. From 1996-2002 he served as chair of the Litigation Department which, with more than 100 lawyers, is considered one of the area's deepest and most sophisticated. He has been responsible, at various times, for the hiring, retention and promotion of the firm's lawyers, for business development, for strategic planning and for acquisitions. Although specializing in complex commercial, class action and mass tort litigation, Mr. Madva has tried hundreds of cases of all types, including those involving business disputes, product liability, bankruptcy, environmental, and criminal law. Mr. Madva also possesses considerable skill in the amicable resolution of matters. He recently assisted a client, albeit after some protracted litigation, in the recovery of more than $300 million. Representative clients include The Celotex Corporation, American Meter Company, Ferag-Americas, Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Rohm and Haas, the AHP Settlement Trust, the Armstrong World Industries Settlement Trust, and the Celotex Settlement Trust. Having practiced for several years as a federal public defender in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Mr. Madva joined the firm in 1977. Mr. Madva is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers. He lectures frequently regarding complex litigation and on trial practice generally. Mr. Madva contributes a significant amount of time to non-profits in the region. He is chairman of the board of directors of The Opera Company of Philadelphia and is on the boards of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, The Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Police Athletic League, The Defender Association of Philadelphia, Community Legal Services, and the Central Philadelphia Development Corporation (CPDC). He is also chairman of the Board of Governors of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and serves on the board of the St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children. Recently, Mr. Madva was asked to Chair the Board of Trustees for the Philadelphia Prison System. He has been included for many years in Who's Who in American Lawyers, Who's Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. Mr. Madva is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations. He has been a member of the House of Delegates of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and served on the board of governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association, also serving as its chair of the Judicial Selections and Review Committee. Presently he is co-chairing the Raise the Bar fundraising effort for the Philadelphia Bar Foundation. Mr. Madva is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New York and also before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania A 1970 graduate of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Mr. Madva received a B.A. degree, cum laude, in Russian studies. Mr. Madva earned his J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1973.
